When it comes to solar panels, one important thing to consider is the health of your existing roof. Solar panels and mounting equipment weigh two to four pounds per square foot, on average. This means that your roof will need to be sturdy and stable enough to be able to handle this extra weight. So, if your roof is dated, or needs repairs, patches or replacements, then it’s best to address these issues prior to your solar panel installation.

With that being said, one of the best things about going solar is that if you replace your roof as part of the install, you have the option of financing the roof. Not only that, you will be able to deduct up to 30% of the solar panel installation costs from your federal income taxes. The Federal Solar Tax Credit, also known as the Residential Clean Energy Credit, is designed to encourage investment in solar installation, and most Florida and Georgia residents will easily qualify for this tax credit.

There are a lot of benefits when it comes to switching to solar. The first thing every homeowner should consider, however, is the return on investment. While up-front costs may be intimidating to some, it’s important to consider your solar panel installation as an investment, and one that will help you save money in the long term.

Installing solar panels is a wonderful way to save on electricity bills, as you will be generating your own electricity, and relying less on utility companies. As utility rates rise at an average of 4-5% each and every year, being able to create your own energy becomes increasingly valuable. Not only that, the cost of going solar has decreased substantially in the past decade by more than 70%, and making the switch can save you anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000 over a 20-year period.

Most homeowners will also be eligible for net metering when they switch to solar, as well. So, when your solar panels produce more energy than you consume, the extra energy is sent to the grid to power other homes and businesses. This, in turn, reduces the amount of electricity companies need to produce, and you are compensated via bill credits.

This works both ways, as well, so when you need more energy than your solar panels can create, your energy will then come from the grid. Your utility provider will charge you for how much electricity you use, minus any bill credits you’ve previously received. At the end of the month, you will only be charged for net usage, which is the difference between the amount of electricity your solar panels have produced and the electricity you consume.

And let’s not forget that adding solar panels to your home can increase its value, and when it comes time to sell, homes with solar panels generally turn a higher profit than those without. Even further, solar panels require very little maintenance and are extremely durable, saving you time and money when it comes to upkeep. They are built to stand the test of time, and are made to last for over 25 years!

Solar panels are not just great for your home, they’re great for the environment, too. Solar energy is one of the top eco-friendly energy solutions, and can help to reduce carbon dioxide and other dangerous gas emissions, which can have a negative impact on the environment. The energy produced is clean and pollutant-free, emitting zero greenhouse gasses.

Going solar also means energy independence. The sun is a reliable source of energy, and utilizing this natural resource means less dependence on fossil fuels and oil. This makes for a more consistent energy bill, especially in times when energy is in high demand. In addition, solar panels can still produce anywhere from 10% to 25% of their maximum capacity on rainy and cloudy days, making solar panels a great investment, rain or shine!
